Our Vision with travelroute44 is to show you why it has to be on your wish list on your next journey. Like all special places on earth, you have to be there to experience it and when you are here, you'll know why you are lucky to BE !
Fynbos covered Mountains and Blue Ocean all the way, the R 44 is just an hour's drive from Cape Town with the N2 to Somerset west You take the scenic coastal route R 44 from Gordons Bay to Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Hangklip, Bettys Bay, Kleinmond and Arabella Golf Estate. The R44 is one of those most scenic drives in the World!
For many years the coastal area of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve (KBR) was only accessible on foot, donkey or by boat. The road, Clarens Drive, was built in 1950 by Italian POW's during the second World War. Route 44 was rebuilt in the 1990's and has parking areas to do some whale spotting during the season, enjoy the magnificent sea views across False Bay, or visit the Penguin colony in Bettys Bay, the beach at Kleinmond or go in search of the wild horses of Arabella. A beautiful piece of the Western Cape where the journey in itself is something to behold - absolutely spectacular !
And should you look for accommodation, an array of B&B's, lodges and luxury hotels are available. Add a number of well established boutiques, lifestyle shops and restaurants with scrumptious food, or a real 'old English pub, or a simple place for grub, the traveller will find all this on R44. Food-for-the-soul, cliff path-walks, shark cage diving, sunset cruises, para-gliding, awesome flights over Walker Bay, hiking trails, arts and crafts, unspoilt beaches, picnics, fishing, sand-boarding, deep-sea diving and horse riding are but some of the attractions on route.
The weather ishould always be considered. As with the rest of the Western Cape, this is a wet winter region with surprisingly lovely days in between and beautiful hot summers for the sun addict. Summer spans from late October to well into April, so plan ahead and ensure you include R44 on your journey.
